TelephoneA working electrical voice-transmission system was first demonstrated by Johann Philipp Reis in 1863. His machine consisted of a vibrating membrane that opened or closed an electric circuit. While Reis only used his machine to demonstrate the nature of sound, other inventors tried to find more practical applications of this technology. They were found by Alexander Graham Bell in 1876 when he was awarded a patent for the first operational telephone. This invention proved to revolutionize the way people communicate throughout the world.Bells interest in telephony was primarily derived from his background in vocal physiology and his speech instruction to the deaf. His breakthrough experiment occurred on June 2, 1875. He and his assistant, Thomas Watson, were working on a harmonic telegraph. When a reed stuck on Watsons transmitter an intermittent current was converted to a continuous current. Bell was able to hear the sound on his receiver confirming his belief that sound could be transmitted and reconverted through an electric wire by using a continuous electric current.

The Concrete Centres activities and achievements have made significant progress during 2006. The UK has one of the lowest per capita consumptions of cement and concrete in the world. The Concrete Centre has been set up to address this by ensuring that the key decision makers and influencers in the construction industry are made fully aware of the wide range of benefits and attributes that concrete has. The most critical project stages that assist in the formulation of a decision as to whether or not to go with concrete are the feasibility study and detailed design. It is at these stages that the frame material is determined. Therefore, it is essential that the decision makers involved are able to make a fully informed choice in terms of structural design, construction methods, fire performance, environmental and acoustic performance and thermal efficiency. We in the concrete industry need to ensure that best practice information on the most efficient forms of concrete construction is available to design teams. The resources and advice provided by The Concrete Centre prove invaluable at this critical stage of the design process.
Run by The Concrete Centre in collaboration with The Building Centre Trust and delivered by leading designers, innovators and manufacturers, the Concrete Elegance lecture series provides graduate architects and engineers with an inspirational insight into a range of projects where off-site and cast in-place concrete have been used to achieve innovative and elegant design. The 2007 Concrete Elegance series continued to cover a range of issues and projects. The first lecture examined developments in sustainable concrete architecture. In particular, it focused on the reduction of both embodied and operational CO2, how to create carbon-neutral concrete and the design of single-skin self-finished external concrete walls. Lecture speakers included: Toby Lewis of Fielden Clegg Bradley Architects, who discussed the National Trust Heelis building in Swindon and the Persistence Works in Sheffield; Patrick Filipaj of Zurich-based Banz Choffat Filipaj Architekten, who examined the single-skin concrete construction of Peter Gartmanns Char House; and Ian Prichett of Lime Technology, who presented the use of hempcrete for Adnams Distribution Centre designed by architect Aukett Fitzroy Robinson.
Much of the material stems from practical problems encountered by Neville in consulting work or in litigation. For copies, contact the American Concrete Institute on +1 248 848 3800, e-mail: bkstore@concrete.org.

The home-cleaning experts at Hoover recommend weekly or more frequent vacuuming with a Hoover upright with an allergen-filtration system. For many people, spring is considered the high season for allergies. But for some homeowners who dont routinely and thoroughly clean their carpets, the sniffling and sneezing associated with allergies may persist yearround. Deep cleaning, a job once handled mainly by professional carpet cleaners, can be done quickly and effectively by consumers with a Steamvac deep cleaner. The cleaner distributes a solution of hot tap water and special detergent into the carpet, agitates the fibers with its exclusive, five rotating-brush system and then extracts the solution containing dirt. The five-brush agitation system and carpet detergent helps release the dirt and allergens from the carpet fibers for removal by the Steamvac deep cleaner.

* On Beauty by Zadie Smith The Penguin Press, September 2005 $25.95, ISBN 1-594-20063-7 The members of both the Belsey and Kipps families are stalwart theorists. Their individual and collected perceptions of things beautiful, both aesthetically and physically, academically and morally–to some extent–are held close and expressed with convincing conviction. Its the vivacity of these characters that Zadie Smith brings to On Beauty and lends to the books much-deserved attention.
This academic satire is about two professors and their families. Howard Belsey is a white secular liberal, a specialist in Rembrandt, who is engaged in ideological warfare with a visiting professor, Monty Kippes, a conservative Christian scholar from Trinidad. Each character in the story is undermined by his or her self-deceptions. Howards attachment to theoretical knowledge seems to preclude understanding or controlling his adulterous behavior. Smith brilliantly draws these and other characters and gently but wittily pierces their illusions and pretensions. Howards African-American wife, Kiki, is one of the few characters to offer emotional or moral ballast, along with her son Jerome, who rejects his parents secularism for a newfound Christianity.
epoch has recognised that there are things pleasing to contemplate independently of the desire we may feel for them. He has no preconceived definition of beauty. Beauty and art were not always so closely related as today: beauty belonged originally to nature, not to created things. This book is therefore a history of Beauty and not a history of art (or of literature or music. Somewhat ironically, however, ideas of beauty are here mainly illustrated by works of art and not, for example, by loaves of beautifully made bread or beautifully laid brick walls. Images and textual selections work together to show that there is no absolute concept of beauty in things or men but criteria shaped by different eras and places.

What made the difference was aloof frontwoman Victoria Bergsman, who last year dramatically left the band hours before an appearance on the Jonathan Ross show. This in the wake of a traumatic trip to the States, where she collapsed on a New York stage and the band had their equipment nicked in Boston. The Concretes have recruited a new singer from within their own ranks- drummer Lisa Millberg. Taking just the bands nervy start, Millberg seems to be a mistake. The gangly blondes awful melodic aim makes you fear for the lights. You only snatch at rare moments where she finds a delicate sigh that matches the tenderness of certain songs. Uncomfortable at the front of the stage, Millberg continually seeks reassurance from colleagues, especially guitarist Maria Eriksson, with whom she shares some wayward call and responses. Yet Millberg connects with the crowd, not only through vulnerability, but also with a playful banter unknown in previous shows. She points out that this is the 11th time the outfit have performed in London and adds that “the venues keep getting smaller”. Such is The Concretes plight that the vocalist introduces “Oh Boy” with an urge to vote for their forthcoming single on digital station BBC6. This is one of the few numbers close to matching the band in their pomp.
Cement use in the historic cemeteries of the French Quarter Although most concrete crypts and mausoleums are built in low-lying areas, where water could easily destroy a coffin, its not entirely true for the city of New Orleans. Basically, the majority, if not all, of the crypts and mausoleums in the cemeteries of New Orleans were built along the lines of traditional European cemeteries and to represent the architecture of a French city. In fact, many visitors to New Orleans have stated that these cemeteries do look like a miniature city-a “city of the dead”1 (Fig. 2 and 3). Most of the crypts and mausoleums in New Orleans are constructed of brick covered with a cement plaster (see Fig. 4). Even when these crypts and mausoleums need repair work done, workers use a mixture of both lime and cement. This combination does not detract from the original structure.2

For the month of April, Help the Aged is running a `Ring in Spring appeal encouraging businesses to have a green spring clean. Unwanted mobile phones can be recycled into as much as L30 each by Help the Aged to help older people. The average mobile phone is replaced every 18 months amounting to 15 million phones being made redundant every year. If your place of work is throwing away junk accumulated since the last office spring clean make sure old and unwanted mobile phones are not trashed with the rest of the garbage. Hilary Birch, recycling account manager at Help the Aged says: “If we got only a pound for every phone made redundant in 2002 alone, it would mean a very conservative L15 million to help further our work. Of course not everyone knows how valuable junk can be to us and this is why we are raising awareness through the `Ring in Spring appeal.”

Kitchen. By Yoshimoto Banana. Translated from the Japanese by Megan Backus. New York: Grove Press, 1993. 152 Pages. Kitchen, a short novel, is paired in the same titled book, with a novella of Bananas, Moonlight Shadow. Kitchen chronicles a contemporary young womans journey through the grief and healing process. Banana uses this main character as a vehicle for the reader to view the social change occurring in contemporary Japan. The first person account by the main character, Mikage, describes the loss she feels not only for all the members of her immediate family, but also the larger nuclear family of past generations. The story begins with the death of Mikages grandmother, the last surviving member of her family. Her grandparents raised Mikage, after both of her parents were killed when she was very young, and in her teenage years, her grandfather has also died. As part of her grief process, Mikage is adopted by a very complex and contemporary family, Yuichi, a young man who had befriended Mikages grandmother and Eriko, his transsexual mother. While living with this family, Mikage learns the meaning of joy, finds comfort in belonging to a family, and develops a satisfying career in cuisine. However, her grief and healing process become complicated when Eriko dies and Yuichi succumbs to depression over his mothers death. Because of Erikos and Yuichis generosity and compassion, Mikage is able to reach Yuichi, and in the process, learns a life lesson, finding the necessary balance between suffering and pleasure.
Custom Kitchens
Have you ever thought of your kitchen as a laboratory? Whenever you make something in your kitchen, you are using science. Cooks, like scientists, combine and change materials to create something new. Everything in the world is made of chemicals. When chemicals are mixed together, interesting things can happen. In laboratories, scientists mix and experiment with chemicals. In kitchens, cooks mix chemicals also, but call them ingredients. A scientist in a laboratory follows an experiment. A cook in a kitchen follows a recipe. Both need to follow directions and measure carefully. They both use special equipment. A scientist may use test tubes and a cook may use bake pans. For both of them, temperature and timing are very important.

Is there anything a caller hates more than an automated answering system? One of the biggest abuses in the retail environment is the automated attendant, said William Belcher, a retail specialist and behavioral psychologist with Damar Management. The consumer is reaching out to buy, or to check on a product or service, and the retailer has put up an artificial barrier. Lets say you use an automated answering system, and you get 100 telephone calls a week. Of those 100 calls, according to the study, 26 will hang up before you get a chance to talk to them. Now, lets say that five of the 26 callers would have come into your store and purchased $100 worth of products. Thats $500 a week youre potentially losing, or $26,000 a year.
AUTOMATION All these things are true. Yet, investment in technology may prove a sterile use of scarce capital. Worse, abortive installations of automated systems may become disruptive, cancerous to the fabric of a mortgage bankers basic operations. How can the power of technology simultaneously have latent in it the forces of creation and destruction? The ideal use of technology is when technology can be managed to support a mortgage companys fundamental business strategy; not having to bend the way business is done to conform to rigidities built into any system.
Advancing automation projects is a tough job. Finding the right products often defines that projects viability. We try to provide you, the reader, with interesting and innovative automation products. Lets see what weve found this month.

New tools and techniques for design, scale-up and optimization of operations LONDON NEW YORK — Process Systems Enterprise (PSE), providers of the gPROMS advanced simulation and modeling environment, this week at INTERPHEX 2007 announced a comprehensive suite of software facilities and services for high-fidelity modeling of batch, semi-batch and continuous pharmaceutical operations. The AMLs are sets of high-fidelity predictive models for design, scale-up and operational optimization of reaction, crystallization and separation processes of all kinds, including reactive batch distillation and absorption and membrane processes. The models combine sophisticated approaches such as a population balance modeling with detailed kinetic and multicomponent diffusion models. Models can be validated against customers own laboratory or pilot plant data to adjust parameter values to observed data in order to ensure extreme predictive accuracy at all scales of operation.
PLEASANTON — If you feel the ground rumble in Pleasanton this weekend, dont worry — its just the 3,000 or so hot rods, custom cars, classics, trucks, muscle cars and street machines making their way to the Goodguys 17th Autumn Get-Together car show and swap meet. Area drivers can expect delays on local freeways and roads, as thousands are expected to attend the two-day show at the Alameda County Fairgrounds. The event, presented by Peterson Tractors, will feature special parking areas for several popular makes and models including the “Young Guys” area for rodders 25 and younger; a “Trick Truck Corral” featuring pickup trucks; and a “Homebuilt Heaven” for rodders who built their rides themselves. More than 200 companies will exhibit products and hold demos. Thousands of vendors will be selling rare and vintage parts.
SYRACUSE - Between 65,000 and 75,000 car enthusiasts are expected to attend the eighth annual DuPont Hot Hues Syracuse Nationals car show this weekend at the New York State Fairgrounds. The event, which is staged July 20 to 22, features a demolition derby, tractor pull, and model-car contest. More than 300 vendors will be on hand selling parts to build and restore cars. Cicero-based Tri-State Auto Auction, Inc. is bringing its classic-car auction back for a second year. Last year, the one-day event sold 28 cars. “People are still buying classic cars,”OConnor says.
Diesel Generators
November 20th, 2008
Kipors KDE5000TA portable diesel generator boasts a maximum output of 5 kVA but is quiet due to the low-noise design of its enclosure and the addition of an intake silencer and resonator. A digital control panel displays critical operating information such as load characteristics, voltage, power (kVA), frequency, total run time and battery charge voltage. If an unexpected shutdown occurs, the front panel displays a code that reveals the nature of the fault. A convenient electric starter gets the generator up and running quickly. Despite its high output, the KDE5000TA runs for 8.5 hours on a single tank of fuel. Fill in 202 on reader service form or visit http://OneRs.hotims.com/13966-202 [ILLUSTRATION OMITTED]
Alaska Diesel Electric, Seattle, Wash., has been building small heavy-duty marine and industrial generator sets since 1963. To meet increasing demands for high quality electrical output they have developed a new generator called the PXK line. This generator will first be featured in the new model M843JK gen-set rated 10 kW. A three-cylinder, water-cooled Lugger diesel drives the newly designed generator at 1800 rpm and the unit is also available at 8 kW for 1500 rpm, 50 Hz/240 V output.A key design objective was to increase performance without increasing generator set length. Alaska Diesel engineers reported that the new generator design has actually decreased overall generator set length in several configurations. For example, length of the 8 kW model has gone from 35.2 in. to 32.5 in.; the 12 kW set from 38.1 in. to 36.6 in.; and the 20 kW set from 47.7 in. to 43.4 in.New design features include the addition of more copper throughout the generator to increase efficiency and motor starting capability. The additional copper also holds temperature rise to 95 [degrees] C to extend generator life in high heat environments such as inside sound shields housed in relatively small engine rooms.
Emanuele Pirro paused, took a deep breath, then leaned forward in his chair, elbows on the table, and said, in a very defining tone, “And now I would like to talk about the car . . . . Its diesel- powered.” That said, he waited for a response. Diesel engines, among most Americans, are not associated seriously with high-speed auto racing. For more than 30 minutes, Pirro, fresh off a flight from Italy, had talked about the upcoming Le Mans Series race coming to Miller Motorsports Park this week, about high speeds and hard braking and maximum performance.

When Tom Allisma needed a senior thesis topic, a knockout punch for his budding portfolio, and a place to live following graduation from the University of Nebraska Lincoln, he decided to tackle all three tasks at once. He designed and built, with his fathers help, a striking 390-square-foot apartment inside a portion of his familys home in Omaha, Neb. His program began with the creation of a new private entrance, through a former workshop at the rear of the garage. Constructed entirely of economical, durable birch plywood, the “entry box” or vestibule, showcases a rolling storage cabinet on casters that doubles as the bathroom door. The cabinet is “voyeuristic,” says Allisma, because you can see partly through the screen to the corrugated metal walls of the bathroom beyond–but you never get “a good solid view of whats going on in them.” A cantilevered staircase composed of construction grade 2×12s with aluminum angle noses, leads to the apartment above. Space tot the loft was created by combining several rooms at the back of the house and raising the ceilings from 8 feet to 14. Allisma calls the result “cross-programmed space,” because it incorporates seating areas. a display wall for Iris model-car collection, closets, a dining buffet, and a multipurpose storage unit. Modeled after a lifeguard tower, the moveable unit holds a closet on one side and a ladder on the other. The ladder leads to the lifeguard chair he uses for a closer view of the wall-mounted television and to an elevated wine cooler placed nearby. Hidden completely out of sight is the bed, which rolls into the loft from an insulated cavity in the south wall. Allisma says it takes just seconds to glide the sleeping platform into place.

YOU dont sink much lower into the gutter than prostitute Gillian Gilchrist. With her jacket slung over the stump of her arm ripped off by a crazed punter, heroin junkie Gillian is back on the streets. Touting for business, with her pond life pimp of a boyfriend standing by, poor Gillian cuts a sorry, tragic picture. I suppose it was inevitable, even though the picture still shocks. Its only 26 days since she looked out of the pages of a newspaper with her bandaged stump and told of her terrifying ordeal at the hands of a monster dubbed the M8 ripper.
Ever wonder if all those never-need-cleaning gutter covers and devices really work? Take a crash course in gutter systems, and compare the pros and cons. The four most common gutter materials are aluminum, copper, galvanized steel, and plastic. Aluminum K-styles are the least expensive and wont rust. Copper is durable, but its also the most expensive. Steel gutters require a galvanized process and industrial coatings that can run up the cost. Stick components are generally plastic or vinyl. ROBERT MARTIN

Dear Abby: “Bride-to-Be” asked if it was common or proper to wear her wedding gown to the airport or on a plane. You advised her that it was impractical, but theres no law against it. By that, I assume your intention was to say that no rule of etiquette specifically forbids it, rather than a criminal statute. Dear Jessica: Most of my readers who chose to comment on that letter agreed I was right to discourage the bride-to-be. But not all of them did. Read on: Dear Abby: Leaving for my honeymoon last summer, I wore a white baseball cap with a short veil attached so everyone would know I was just married. — Starr in Santa Cruz, Calif.
Brides-to-be trying on gowns at The Wedding Salon of Manhasset received expert advice from Atlanta-based designer Anne Barge, who was on-site Feb. 12 for her only Long Island trunk show. A creator of old-fashioned gowns with a nod to classic elegance favored by Audrey Hepburn, Barge made recommendations on gowns and alterations to The Wedding Salon clients. Nancy Aucone, who owns The Wedding Salon with business partner Susan Finale, said theres always a lot to learn when a designer visits the shop. We only do customizing changes when a designer is here, Aucone said. When they say it can be done and write the order, and do a sketch - a picture is worth 1,000 words.
LOS ANGELES — Goodwill Southern California (GSC) recently received a donation of 2,000 brand-new wedding gowns from a local bridal shop. Before distributing them in its retail stores, GSC will host its first ever Bridal Gown Super Sale.

Conventional Fire Alarms
November 20th, 2008
There are two areas of major concern over the new decision to send only one fire engine in future in response to daytime automatic fire alarms in West Yorkshire. The first worry is about the adequacy of this fire cover and the second has to be about the undemocratic way in which the change has been imposed upon us. But the current situation, where one engine and four firefighters are sent where three engines were sent before is hardly one likely to fill the public with confidence.

Byline: By STEVE HUGHES AMERICAN car giant Chevrolet will be displaying its commitment to the European market by showing four new models that will eventually come to the UK at next months Paris Motor Show. Chevrolet is one of the UKs fastest-growing brands, with a rise of almost 30% last year and a further rise of more than 10% so far this year, despite the overall decline of the UK market. The company could sell as many as half a million cars in Europe this year, of which almost 20,000 will be in the UK.
Louis ChevroletLouis Joseph Chevrolet was born on December 25, 1878 in La Chaux-de-Fonds, Switzerland. He was the second son of Joseph Felician Chevrolet, a watch and clockmaker, and Angelina Marie (Mahon) Chevrolet. Young Louis grew up with six brothers and sisters. The family moved to Beaune, a small town in the Burgundy region of France, when Louis was about six. His father taught him basic mechanical skills and stressed the importance of precision in the manufacture of machine parts, which later contributed to his skill as an engine designer. To help with the family finances, Chevrolet got a job as a guide in a local wine cellar. Deciding that the method of decanting wine from one cask to another was too slow, Chevrolet designed a wine barrel pump which brought him local accolades and was used in the Burgundy region for decades.Bicycle racing was a great weekend sport in Beaune and this is where Chevrolet developed his interest in speed. He experimented with gear ratios until he found the one best suited to his physical ability. While still in his teens and just out of grammar school, Chevrolet became an apprentice in a bicycle shop. The owner had a 1.25 bhp de Dion tricycle that was usually broken. Chevrolet bought repair manuals and worked on the bike in his spare time. He soon found the trouble, sent away for parts from the manufacturer, and had it in working order. Next he began building bicycles in the winter and selling them in the summer to tourists under the name Frontenac, after the seventeenth century governor of Frances North American colonies. He later used the same name in America for the automobile company he began. About this time, Chevrolet saw his first automobile and was fascinated with the new invention. His bicycle manufacturing business was not very successful, and Chevrolet became an apprentice at the Darracq, Hotchkiss, and Dion Bouton auto factories. In 1898,
he got a job with the Mors Auto Company, and was sent to an auto dealership in Montreal, Canada, in 1899, at the age of twenty-one. Chevrolet worked as a chauffeur-mechanic for six months and then moved to Brooklyn, New York. He worked for the DeDion Bouton Motorette Company and soon was given the opportunity to be a substitute racecar driver for Fiat in New York City. In 1901, after his fathers death, he brought the rest of his family to America. Chevrolet became a citizen in 1915.

GUTTERS often get clogged by debris in autumn, which makes them vulnerable to ice damage in winter. And that means now is the time to carry out those essential repairs. Blocked downpipes can be caused by leaves or a birds nest, but never try to push it down. Instead, hook it out with bent wire or hire a Sani- snake which will worm its way to the obstruction.

Afire alarm system may not work properly if the wiring isnt properly installed. “You can follow a careful design procedure. You can select a fire alarm system control unit, initiating devices and notification appliances from a quality manufacturer. But if you dont properly install the wiring that connects the system components together, the fire alarm system for your college campus or other protected property may not work reliably” As the least glamorous part of a fire alarm system, the wiring receives very little hype. Consumers may agonize over their choice of every other fire alarm system component, but very few shop carefully for the wiring that will connect those components.

Health is a measure of quality of life that is difficult to define and measure. In the 1940s, the World Health Organization (WHO) defined health as a state of complete physical, mental, and social well-being and not merely the absence of disease or infirmity. At the first International Conference on Health Promotion in Ottawa, Canada (1986), the Ottawa Charter for Health Promotion built on the WHOs concept and further defined health as a resource for everyday life. a positive concept emphasizing social and personal resources, as well as physical capabilities. Good health enables one to function independently within a changing environment.

FEBRUARY IS National Pet Dental Health Month, and for good reason. Just like humans, the dental health of our pets is directly linked to their general health and quality of life. According to the American Veterinary Dental Society, our pets dental health is the most overlooked aspect of their care, and more than 80 percent of dogs and 70 percent of cats show some signs of gum disease by age 3. We cant check the sink for pink when it comes to our dogs and cats, so what exactly should we be looking for when checking an animals mouth for dental problems? The most common symptom of dental problems in our dogs and cats is bad breath. But dont rely on the breath test alone. The best thing to do is to pull up their lips and look at their teeth and gums. The gums, especially the gum closest to the base of the tooth, should be a healthy pink color and there should be no swelling or bleeding, which would indicate gingivitis. Healthy teeth should be white, not yellowed or discolored, and you should not see any evidence of tartar buildup on the teeth or at the gum line. When doing this exam, check for broken or chipped teeth. If you notice any problems at all, schedule an appointment with your vet so he can examine and treat any problems.

Joseph would then be in his 20s. It is probable that his excellent dental health is due to his diet as a child; that is no sugary drinks and no sweets.

The inhabitants of Magazineville, Planet Glossy, live in homes with walk-in wardrobes where cashmere sweaters lie folded in cubby- holes, crisply ironed, colour- sorted shirts hang on rails, and shoes are stacked on dedicated shelves. The rest of us - well, lets just close the door on that. None of this comes cheap. If you want to dress your storage as handsomely as your body, think in terms of at least pounds 1,460 per metre. Its the same story at BB Italia. Gleaming, fully fitted wardrobes with lacquered or frosted glass doors start from pounds 1,500 per metre. If this seems like a breathtaking amount to spend on, er, empty space, then its worth considering how much airy nothing is actually needed. This is where California Closets comes in. A company rep will arrive on your doorstep to delve into your innermost wardrobe secrets before designing a bespoke system from pounds 550 per metre.
